» Zanskar Trek [19 days]
Delhi - Srinagar - Kargil - Rangdum - trek from Padum to Lamayuru - Leh - Delhi
Wide open spaces, vertiginous mountains and Buddhist culture. Visit Gompas (Buddhist monasteries) inhabited by communities of monks. Step in villages inhabited by a population still welcoming despite difficult living conditions.
Program:
Purchase on your own your international flights (round trip to Delhi). Our services start on arrival in Delhi Airport.
You first spend two days in Leh, capital of Ladakh, to get acclimatized to altitude before trekking. There is also an option via Leh in Ladakh (the trekking route is the same anyway).
After three days drive to Padum, start trekking for ten days.
Grading: strenuous/challenging. Requires physical fitness.
Walking time: 4 to 7 hours daily.
Altitude: Few passes between 4,000 and 5,050 m high.
Direction: South/North.
Day by day itinerary (via Srinagar):[+]
Day 1 : Meeting and greeting in Delhi Airport and transfer to hotel.
D2 : fly from Delhi to Srinagar, capital of Kashmir (1,700 m high). Board a Houseboat in beautiful Dal Lake, dotted with lotuses and waterlilies. Rest for two days.
D3 : A "floating market" is held at dawn on the lake : buyers and sellers, on board of their tiny boats, trade fruits and vegetables. Also visit the Mughal Gardens, designed by the Emperors who used to appreciate Kashmir's blessed climate: Chesmashahi, Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh.
D4 : Drive to Kargil (2,800 m) via Zoji La pass, at the limit between Kashmir green valleys and Zanskar naked mountains.
D5 : Long drive to the heart of Zanskar. Have a break in Rangdum where stands a gompa (Buddhist Monastery) dating back to the 18th century. Enjoy a breathtaking view on the Nun and Kun Mounts (7,130 m).
Camping overnight.
D6 : Reach Padum (3,650 m) and visit Sani Gompa.
D7 : Start trekking slowly towards Karsha (3,600 m). Camp near a gompa.
D8 : Walk down towards Rinam then follow the Zanskar River until Pishu (3,450 m). You can wander around Zangla Village.
D9 : Today the path is even through a moonlike landscape. Walk up then down to Hanumil (3,400 m), a tiny village located at the entrance of breathtaking gorges.
D10 : Steep hike in the gorge up to Parfi La pass, which marks the limit between Zanskar and Ladakh. Then walk on Snertse trail (3,850 m).
D11 : Walk up to Hanuma La (4,700 m). From there have look back at the gorge which you have just gone through for few days, and enjoy the view on Ladakh's snowcapped peaks. Walk more until you see Lingshet gompa, your destination today (3,900 m).
D12 : Today you have to walk up and down alternately while you cross Netuke La and Khyupe La passes (3,850 m). Then reach Singge La base camp (4,550 m) near the cascade.
D13 : Singge La ("the Lion's Pass") is the highest point of your trek at 5,050 m. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and locate Bumitse La, the next pass you have to cross before reaching the picturesque village of Photaksar.
D14 : Rest or walk around Photaksar (3,750 m).
D15 : Walk along Photang River and cross it at the bridge before walking up to Sisir La. Walk down to Hanupatta.
D16 : Walk down into the gorge of a small river. After crossing Phanjila continue into the valley towards Wanlah. Visit the old gompa. Walk up to Prinkiti La (3,650 m) then reach Lamayuru (3430 m), set in a beautiful geological formation. End of trek.
Visit the old gompa of Lamayuru, built on the remains of one of 108 temples built by Rinchen Zangpo in Ladakh. He chose the place to the memory of Naropa, the "lama of Yuru", an ascetic who had lived and meditated in a cave for few years.
D17 : Drive to Leh (3500 m) via Alchi temples, some of them built before the Tibetan era. Check in your hotel in Leh.
D18 : Visit Leh and its famous monasteries: Matho, Hemis, Thiksey... Hemis Gompa (500 monks) offers a collection of beautiful frescoes depicting the life of famous monks. Visit also Shey Palace and Stok Palace.
